Volvo is expanding its electrification initiatives heading into the 2022 model as part of a concerted effort to deliver a more sustainable future for automobiles. In addition to the Recharge line of hybrid and pure electric luxury cars and crossovers, Volvo is also swapping its T5 and T6 powertrains for new B5 and B6 mild-hybrid (MHEV) models with improved efficiency, performance, and driving dynamics. The new powertrains will be standard on the 2022 Volvo S60, S90, XC60, and V90 Cross Country.

Volvo is replacing its turbocharged T5 and twin-charged T6 powertrains with new mild-hybrid variants for select 2022 models. The B5 and B6 MHEV models equip a 48-volt electric motor to harvest the energy typically lost during braking and coasting and store it in a small battery. The energy is then redeployed to support the gasoline engine during ignition and stop-starts, providing reduced fuel consumption, smoother acceleration, and a small power boost.
The standard B5 powertrain adds a 48-volt mild hybrid system to the base 2.0-liter turbo-four, increasing horsepower to 260 (+10 over the T5) and boosting fuel economy by 2–4 mpg depending on the model. The available B6 powertrain replaces the twin-charged (turbo and supercharged) 2.0-liter four-cylinder with an MHEV system that generates slightly less horsepower than the T6 version (308 vs. 316) but boosts torque to 310 pound-feet (+15 over the T6).
Volvo Recharge Plug-In Hybrid
If you're seeking something even more powerful, efficient, and environmentally friendly, consider the Volvo Recharge plug-in hybrid powertrain, available across Volvo's lineup. With a larger electric motor supporting the twin-charged 2.0-liter four-cylinder power-plant, Recharge models generate an impressive 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. Plus, an 11.6-kWh battery pack enables an electric-only range of 19–22 miles depending on the model.
