An environmentally friendly option designed to appeal to a broader audience is now available with Volvo’s Mild Hybrid or MHEV (Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle) engine. Mild Hybrids combine a traditional combustion engine with an electric motor. Together, this pair is more economical — between 15% and 20% more fuel efficient and while reducing CO2 emissions.
Mild Hybrids are not plugged into an external charger. Rather, they produce energy generated by breaking. That energy is stored in a 48 Volt battery and used to boost the performance of the combustion engine when accelerating. An integrated started generator (ISG) is used to start the engine and brake or slow the car. These energy-saving processes are estimated to save up to 2 mpg in both city and combined miles.
Volvo’s Mild Hybrid technology is now available in several models including: XC90, XC60, XC40, S90, S60, V90 Cross Country and V60 Cross Country. A Mild Hybrid is an option for drivers looking to be more economical and environmentally friendly, without compromising on the performance or power of their vehicle.
